The Georgia Association of College Republicans (GACR) has publicly condemned the behavior of some members of the Kennesaw State University (KSU) student body toward conservative students. This response follows a disturbing incident during a memorial event honoring the late Charlie Kirk. The event, held on October 14th, 2025, was disrupted by students who chose confrontation over respectful dialogue.
The Incident at KSU
On the evening of October 14th, members of KSU’s College Republicans, alongside Young Americans for Freedom and Young Americans for Liberty, organized a memorial to celebrate Charlie Kirk’s birthday. The event attracted notable attendees and speakers from the Georgia Young Republicans, Georgia Republican Party, and state legislators, including Senator Brian Strickland (R), Senator Ed Setzler (R), Senator Shawn Still (R), and Representative Jordan Ridley (R).
The goal of the memorial was to honor a man who championed free speech, but it became a scene of hostility when students yelled and jeered at the speakers. Unfortunately, the memorial was cut short after one disruptive protestor was arrested.

Disrespect and Disruption
The disruption went beyond mere noise. Some students directed racist accusations at African American speakers, labeling them as race traitors. This kind of behavior not only undermines the principles of respectful discourse but also damages the campus community’s sense of inclusion and safety.
Additionally, private property was vandalized during the event. As protestors screamed, they defaced a Charlie Kirk banner with ketchup. These actions reflect a troubling disregard for the rights and property of others, particularly in a setting intended to promote free speech and diverse viewpoints.

Leadership Standing Firm
The GACR expressed gratitude to the leaders who stood firm during this challenging time. Jake Izzo, Chairman of KSU’s College Republicans, GACR Executive Director Daniel Shaver, Irish McConnell of YAL at KSU, and the Young Americans for Freedom chapter at KSU were recognized for their steadfast leadership.

The Importance of Free Speech on Campus
Universities are meant to be places where ideas can be exchanged openly and respectfully. The disruption at KSU highlights a growing challenge: balancing the protection of free speech with the emotional responses of the student body. While it is natural for individuals to have strong opinions, it's crucial that these opinions neither silence nor intimidate others.
The incident serves as a call to action for all students and faculty to recommit to the principles of open dialogue. Respecting different viewpoints, even when they are unpopular, is fundamental to the educational mission of any university.
KSU and its student body face a choice. They can either allow incidents like this to deepen divisions or use them as opportunities to foster understanding and respect. The Georgia Association of College Republicans urges the campus community to reflect on the values of free speech, respect, and inclusion.
Supporting diverse voices and including conservative perspectives enriches the campus experience for everyone. It encourages critical thinking and prepares students to engage thoughtfully in a diverse society.

The disruption of the Charlie Kirk memorial at KSU is a stark reminder of the challenges facing free speech on college campuses today. The Georgia Association of College Republicans stands firm in its support of respectful dialogue and condemns actions that undermine these principles. All members of the academic community must uphold the values of open exchange and mutual respect to foster a truly inclusive environment for learning and growth.
